287. Item (d), Resumptions.-This work was referred to in paragraph 248 Item (d) of last year's Report. The demolition of old houses in Shing Mun Valley was satisfactorily completed on the 29th March, 1931.

288. Item N, Service Reservoir, Shek Lai Pui.-This work was referred to in paragraph 248 Item N of last year's Report. This work was actually completed last year, only trimming and cleaning up of site remaining to be done. Retention money on the contract was paid before the end of the year.

289. Item 0, Second Section Preliminary Works.-This work was referred to in paragraph 248 (0) of last year's Report. Early in January Mr. H. G. F. Gourley of Messrs. Binnie Son & Deacon, Consulting Engineers arrived in the Colony and submitted a report to Government on the 2nd Section of the Shing Mun Valley Scheme. In order to make a closer examination of the foundations on the line of the proposed Gorge Dam a contract was let on 30th April with Messrs. Man Gang for the excavation of an exploration trench. In October Mr. W. J. E. Binnie of the same firm of consultants arrived in the Colony and after an examination of the foundations which had been exposed, made slight alterations to the line of the proposed dam and requested a number of borings to be taken both on the site of the Gorge Dam and the Pineapple Pass Dam. The Hong Kong Excavation Pile Driving and Construction Co. commenced boring in October and by the end of the year four bores were completed leaving a further nine borings to be sunk next year. During the year further survey work was carried out on the line of the proposed access road from Pineapple Pass to the Gorge Dam and the survey of gaps in the ridge on the Eastern side of the proposed reservoir.
