129. Maintenance of Buildings.-Government buildings were kept in a good state of repair. Painting, colourwashing and repairs in accordance with the recurring programme were carried out to fifteen buildings. Major repairs included the following: Police Training School-Cement surfacing to compound and renewing existing wooden floors in concrete, Central British School-Renewing ceilings, Ma Tau Kok Cattle Depot-Extensive repairs, Kowloon Magistracy-Repair of extensive white ant damage. The electrical installations were maintained in good order. Two hundred and sixty-eight fans, twenty-two radiators were cleaned and overhauled. Seventeen hundred and twenty-three points in seven Government buildings were tested and repaired and inventories of electrical fittings issued.

130. Improvements to Buildings. The principal improvements carried out under this heading were as follows:-

Yaumati Pig Market-Extension to; Mong Kok Fire Station-Alteration to house ambulance; Mong Kok Police Station-Renew wood floors in concrete; Kowloon Junior School-Erected fence along approach path to protect children from falling over bank.

Expenditure $1,712.42

131. Roads and Bridges (Maintenance and Improvements). The surfaces of approximately fifty-three miles of roads were generally maintained in a satisfactory manner.

The following are particulars of the additional area laid with improved surfacing during the year:-

(1) Tarring and sanding Square yards. 37,233 (2) 24" granolithic paving slabs laid on footways 19,508 (3) Substitution of 7" reinforced concrete surfacing for ordinary macadam, tarpainted... 19,145 (4) New dry macadam surfacing... 37,233 Expenditure $78,228.34

132. Maintenance of Telephones. The lines and instruments were maintained in good order. The lines and instruments in the Kowloon-Canton Railway were also maintained in a satisfactory manner.
