This reclamation was initiated with the object of providing yards for the junk building industry, but owing to the depressed trade conditions prevailing early in the year, the Contract was terminated on the 14th March, 1927.
Due to insufficient protection, the works already executed at the Southern end of the reclamation suffered damage to a certain extent which was, however, made good at the end of the year.
Approximately 75% of the reclamation area is now available for development.
1927 Estimates, $10,000.00 Total Estimates, $190,800.00
1927 Expenditure, $7,695.13
Expenditure to 31.12.27, $164,495.08
167. Water-boat Dock at Lai Chi Kok.-This work was referred to in Annexe L at page 167 of last year's Report.
The construction of the dock together with the fixing of the necessary water pipes and meters was completed, and it was brought into use in June, 1926. There occurred some movement of the walls of the dock when the filling material had been deposited at the back thereof, and it was ascertained that such movement was due to weak foundations. In order to restore its stability, the West wall was tied back to anchor piles by ten tie bars, while four drainage holes 12 inches in diameter were cut through the plinth course of the wall to relieve the hydrostatic pressure, and a trench was excavated behind the wall and filled with selected ashes and clinkers with the object of relieving the back pressure.
Behind the East wall a rubble mound was deposited, its outer surface being formed to a slope of 1 in 2, and pitched with granite rubble stone set in cement mortar.
The quarters for the dock attendant and meter readers were completed early in the year.
Periodic surveys were made and records compiled of the movements of the walls in question, from which it would appear that such movements have ceased.
