124. Bowen Road Filter Beds,-Conversion.-This work was referred to in paragraph 130 of last year's Report.
Good progress was made with the construction and erection of the plant, and the filters were set in operation on 27th May.
The works generally consist of six rapid gravity filter beds, each 24 feet by 12 feet, containing the filtering medium composed of 2′ 1′′ of fine graded sand and 1′ 8′′ of specially graded pebbles, and a chemical house containing the machinery and reagent proportioning gear.
On completion of the new filters, the work of converting the two remaining slow sand filter beds into additional service reservoirs was commenced. These beds were cleared of their old filtering medium and covered over with a flat reinforced concrete roof supported on piers of vitrified bricks taken from the original slow sand filter beds. Considerable alteration had to be made to the draw-off wells to meet the new conditions and new 18′′ and 15′′ diameter C.I. mains were laid to the main reservoir and the No. 4 Motor respectively. A satisfactory increase in efficiency of this motor has resulted from the extra head of feed water.
By the end of the year the whole plant had been satisfactorily completed and tested, and all retention monies paid.
