From this Summary it may be seen that the ratio of Personal Emoluments and Other Charges ($75,073.86) to the cost of works carried out ($1,983,286.64) is approximately 3.8%, which compares very favourably with costs in connection with other works of a similar nature. The figures, however, are not prepared for this purpose, as small amounts on account of subordinate supervision are sometimes charged direct to works, and no charges are made on account of rents, furniture, stationery, etc.
Ferry Piers. This was referred to in paragraphs 1 (c), 7, and 8 of Annexe L to the Report of the Director of Public Works for 1924.
No expenditure was incurred, there being no actual work on construction carried out.
Some progress was made in connection with the proposed Vehicular Ferry Services between Hongkong and Kowloon, in that terms were settled with the Naval Authorities as to certain conditions relating to the use and exchange of land and foreshore adjoining the Naval premises on Kowloon peninsula, and designs were prepared for alternative sites for the Vehicular Ferry Pier on the Hongkong side of the harbour.
No further action was taken in connection with the proposed new Ferry Piers at Mongkok and Shamshuipo.
As a result of the local conditions prevailing at the time, this item was not included in the Estimates for 1926.
Estimated Expenditure 1925 Actual
$200,000.00 Nil.
Reclamation of Quarry Bay Marine Lot No. 4.-A Contract was entered into with the Netherlands Harbour Works Co. and signed on 9th May, 1925, for the completion of an unfinished contract for this work, which, as stated by the Director of Public Works in paragraph 124 (a) of his Report for 1924, was closed in July of that year.
The approximate value of the new contract is $157,132.40, and should be completed by 8th May, 1926. A poor start was made, however, and progress was slow owing to the difficult nature of the foundations for the nullah extension which run through the original foundations of a long row of old houses known as Nullah Lane. It is anticipated that an extension to the contract time will be necessary.
Estimated Expenditure 1925 Actual
$100,000.00 35,167.81
Forming Rubble Mound for the protection of proposed Reclamation at North Point. The above expenditure was incurred in connection with the dredging of that portion of the trench which is now required to be carried out in order to provide for the future continuation of the quay wall now being built to the adjoining area, without interference.
