The hard pruning of many of the large roadside trees which are growing in the vicinity of telephone and light wires was continued throughout the year.
Formation of Pine Tree Plantations.—Seeds of Pinus Massoniana were sown in situ at the following places, Red Hill, Stanley 20,000, on hills above Shek O Road 50,000, on hills at Taipo Forestry Reserve 146,500, the total weight of seeds used was one hundred and fifty-five pounds.
The establishment of plantations of Pinus Massoniana was continued by means of broadcast seed sowing at the following places, on low hills and grass banks above and below Shek O, Taipo, Castle Peak—Cheung Sha Wan and Conduit Roads, between Victoria Gap and Pokfulum, Wanchai Gap, below Matilda Hospital and public roads on Cheung Chau Island.
Broad-leaved trees planted.—On December 5th, the day on which a reception was given at Taipo Market to His Excellency the Governor by the New Territory Elders, two trees of Poinciana regia were planted in the open space at Taipo Market, one by His Excellency the Governor and one by Lady Clementi.
On the remaining low hills at Tai Wo Po, one-year-old Camphors to the number of 4,708 were planted.
On roadsides in Hongkong, Kowloon, and the New Territories shade and flowering trees to the number of 2,594 were planted; the following were the trees used, Bauhinia variegata 50, Aleurites montana 2,119, and Cinnamomum Camphora 425.
On Cheung Chau Island 3,000 one-year-old Camphors were planted among the five-year-old trees of Pinus Massoniana.
Miscellaneous Planting.—In Stanley Military Cemetery shade and flowering trees and flowering shrubs to the number of 104 were planted and kept in good order; the winds experienced at this spot are very strong, and trees and shrubs are still making very slow progress in spite of the frequent attention which they receive.
In rockeries and on banks throughout the Colony flowering shrubs and Palms to the number of 302 were planted.
Roadside rockeries and waste spaces under the care of the Department were regularly visited and kept in good order; large areas of Blue Grass (Ophiopogon japonicum) were taken up and renewed.
On earth cuttings in various parts of the Colony 116 Ficus repens were planted.
Flowering shade trees on the site of proposed sports grounds at King's Park were removed to and replanted at Sung Wong Toi.
