Trees Felled.-At the commencement of the strike a stock of timber was collected from Stanley and Tytam and stored at the Public Works Department Depot at Wanchai for use in case of emergency; the total amount collected was approximately 500 tons and this necessitated the felling of over 2,000 of the largest Pine trees on the Island.

A large number of Pines and native trees were removed from the Shek Li Pui reservoir basin area.

Undergrowth Clearing.-With the exception of a few weeks following the commencement of the strike, anti-malarial undergrowth clearing was again carried on throughout the whole year, the total area dealt with being 5,722,200 square feet; in connection with surveys, carried on by the Public Works Department an area of 1,578,330 square feet was cleared.

The anti-malarial undergrowth clearing has now been extended to all New Territory Police Stations, the District Office, Taipo, the Island Quarters and private residences in Taipo district.

Lantana and Privet Destruction.-This work was carried on throughout the year and it is hoped that in time the latter plant will be eradicated from Crown Land on the upper levels where it at present flourishes.

Care of Trees in Plantations.-Thick undergrowth was removed from the vicinity of young trees. Large numbers of creepers which were damaging Pines were cut and clumps of Loranthus removed.

The number of Camphors attacked by white ants was small and such trees were at once treated with Carbolineum.

Pine tree caterpillars were, most fortunately, experienced in very small numbers only, the total collected and destroyed amounted to 42 pounds only as against 20,666.6 pounds in 1924.

An area of Government Pine plantation above the Taipo Road near Kang Hau was allotted on licence to the villagers of Hin Tin, which is now occupied by the late residents of Shek Li Pui; a new fire barrier 30 feet in breadth is being formed round the licenced area and will serve the double purpose of a boundary mark and prevent the spread of fires which are so frequently caused by grass-cutters, in their own areas.

Protection from Fire-Two new fire barriers were made during the year, one at Taipo Forestry Reserve 1,450 feet in length and another in the vicinity of the Wireless Station at Cape D'Aguilar 3,852 feet in length.
