BALEEN.

The notes relating to the distribution of the blue and white baleen plates are dealt with above under "Colour." The following are Major Barrett-Hamilton's notes on the form and dimensions of the whalebone in the finners examined at South Georgia :-

C

Males.

No. 242 (56-5 ft.):-On either side of the anterior centre there were "about thirteen rows of bristles, four or five to the row; at about the 20th on the side (from the anterior centre) the outer bristle of each row begins to assume the form of a plate. On the right side, No. 150 from the front is the last plate showing white externally; and No. 229 is the last plate" behind which the baleen is represented by an irregularly arranged hairy mass. The subsidiary plates of the largest baleen plates may be reduced to one to each main-plate" 240 (67-5 ft.):-In this whale also there were thirteen rows of bristles on each side of the centre in front; at rows Nos. 17 to 20 on the sides the bristles ended and the plates began. On the right side No. 118 was the last externally white plate, and No. 245 was the last plate; the latter was followed by about twenty rows of bristles. The two notes just dealt with are illustrated with sketches.

253 (69 ft.):-A sketch showing that, owing to the gradual increase in the height of the baleen plates from before backwards, when the whale is lying on its back, the ventral surface of the baleen series "from about 3 in. above the gum in front rises in a gentle slope to "about 2 ft.. excluding bristles, until it drops somewhat abruptly at back of mouth to end in a flat arrangement of hairs and bristles." "Measurements are exclusive of bristles."

Females.

No. 15 (75 ft.):-"Baleen curved and difficult to measure; series nearly

straight, hence different from humpback's."
