APPENDICES.
The remainder of the information collected by Major Barrett-Hamilton may be tabulated as follows :-
APPENDICES.
These observations may be summarized as follows:-
Hairs occur in three positions in the finners of South Georgia.
109
(1) A beard of 19 to 39 hairs, each in. to 1 in. in length, arranged in from two to five more or less irregular rows. In one case these hairs are noted as occurring on black spots when on a white ground.
In one case four hairs were found on the right side of the mandible. (3) In some cases from 1 to "12 in four irregular rows," or an " unusual" number of hairs, were noted as occurring on the snout or top of the head, Each of these hairs (in one case) was soft, apparently not tactile, and carried in a special hole.
These particulars agree very well with those given of the finners captured at Belmullet, Ireland, by Mr. Burfield (Rep. Brit. Assoc., 1912); they do not disagree with the less detailed accounts published by Dr. True and Mr. Haldane.

(counted from anterior end, including short ones.) (counted from anterior end, including 4 × 2 short ones running from gape under pectorals).
Female. (counted from anterior end). Further notes relating to the pleats are:-
Males. No. 30:-"The most superior pleats are a few short ones 3 in. to 4 in. long, starting at the gape and running backwards towards pectoral, which is in about the same plane as the gape." No. 58:- Throat folds end at navel; width 2 in. to
3 in." No. 32:-" Anterior hollows of throat folds vascular and pink." No. 201 :— "A rotten carcase, decayed to yellow between the pleats."
Females. No. 15:"Pleats 3 in. to 4 in. wide; I think the muscle underlying them moves the lower jaw; it is attached thereto at the tip of mandible. Nåvel at last pleat " No. 33: Concavities of throat folds vascular.”
"
NOSE.
A general separate note says:-" Blowhole ridge is not nearly so prominent as in the blue whale, and does not run to tip of snout, but stops short on top of head." In connexion with No. 38, female, Major Barrett-Hamilton noted the heavy blood supply to dorsal surface of snout, and thought it might indicate the presence of sen- sory organs in that region. In No. 32 (67.5 ft.) a blowhole measured 18 in. in length; in No. 87, a male of 68-25 ft., each blowhole was 23-5 in. long, the distance between them being 4 in. front and 13-5 in. behind.
ORGANS OF JACOBBON.
The organs of Jacobson were noted in the male No. 8, and the females Nos. 15 and 33. In the latter they were "prominent with two marks corresponding on the lower jaw." The two marks mentioned on the lower jaw may be identical with the problematical organs " of obscure function, described by Mr. Burfield as occurring in the finners and blue whales examined by him at Belmullet. A gland under the mandibular symphysis" is noted as present in female No. 224 (79 ft.).
PALATE AND TONGUE.
The following are the notes relating to these organs :-
No. 8 (male) :-"Tongue black."
15 (female) "Tongue large, black, finely corrugated.
ularly dusky at back-the balance pink."
Palate irreg-
33 (female):-"Tongue, length 18 ft. circa, partly black with much
corrugated surface for expansion."
