Enclosure 2 in No. 19.
(Orange River Colony. No. 30.)
MY LORD,
Lieutenant-Governor's Office, Bloemfontein,
Orange River Colony, June 30, 1905. WITH reference to Your Excellency's Minute “Orange River Colony, No. 131/ 1905," of the 19th ultimo, forwarding copies of a circular despatch from the Right Honourable the Secretary of State for the Colonies on the subject of Imperial education, I have the honour to state that provided that two or more of the other South African Colonies are prepared to contribute towards the cost of having an edition of illustrated lectures specially prepared for educational use in South Africa the Orange River Colony Government would be ready to join with them. I should be glad to hear what steps the Government of the Transvaal propose to take with regard to this scheme.
I have, &c.,
His Excellency
The Governor, Orange River Colony,
Johannesburg.
H. GOOLD-ADAMS,
Lieutenant-Governor
(1/395.) (Minute.)
Prime Minister's Office, Cape Town, July 11, 1905. Ministers have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of His Excellency the Governor's Minute No. 415, of the 1st instant, transmitting a copy of a despatch, No. 20/94, from His Excellency the High Commissioner, covering a copy of a com- munication from the Resident Commissoner of Basutoland, on the subject of Imperial education, suggesting that in the event of a series of lectures being prepared for use in South Africa, Basutoland should share in the advantage and cost thereof.
In reply Ministers desire to invite His Excellency's attention to their Minute, No. 1/325, of the 15th ultimo, conveying the opinion of this Government in reference to the proposed scheme that as the Superintendent-General of Education had already taken into consideration a scheme on similar lines to the one referred to in the Secre- tary of State's despatch of the 13th April, 1905, it would not appear necessary under the circumstances to incur any expenditure or take any further steps in so far as this Colony is concerned.
