You will probably be able to obtain a copy of this syllabus (Misc. No. 174, dated April, 1905), from the Colonial Office, and 1 shall be obliged if you will approach the Agent-General for the Cape Colony, and arrange in conjunction with him to have the slides illustrating lecture No. 1 replaced by others illustrating the journey from South Africa to England by both the East and West Coast routes; it might also be possible to have alterations made in a few of the slides illustrating lectures No. 2 and No. 7. It is proposed that heads of schools should write their own lectures in every case so that the only requirements will be the actual slides.
I shall be glad to hear from you as soon as possible after you have conferred with the Agent-General for Cape Colony and come to some agreement as to which slides should be replaced by others more suitable for schools in South Africa.

High Commissioner's Office, Johannesburg, July 31, 1905. WITH reference to your circular despatch of April 13th, I have the honour to enclose, for your information, a copy of the undermentioned documents on the subject of Imperial education.
(No. 94.) SIR,
GOVERNOR SIR E. IM THURN to MR. LYTTELTON. (Received August 15, 1905.)
Fiji, Government House, Suva, July 5, 1905. I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your circular despatch of 13th April last* on the subject of the better education of children of the United Kingdom and of the Colonies by means of lectures prepared by Mr. H. J. Mackinder.
2. I do not think that school education in Fiji is yet sufficiently advanced to make it worth while to prepare a special edition of the lectures referred to in your despatch, for use in the few schools which exist here, and which are of a very miscellaneous kind, but I am of opinion that some considerable good might be done if in cach school the teacher, or some other person, were to adapt to the circum- stances of the case the lectures and slides already prepared by Mr. Mackinder for use in the Eastern Colonies.
3. If permissible, I shall be glad if this Colony is supplied-of course upon payment of the cost-with a set of the slides and half a dozen copies of the lectures above referred to; and I shall be obliged if the Crown Agents are directed to send them out and to pay the proper persons for them from Fiji funds.
I have, &c.,
EVERARD IM THURN.
I have, &c.,

High Commissioner

THE HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR CANADA to COLONIAL OFFICE. (Received August 18, 1905.)
[Answered by No. 22.]
Office of the High Commissioner for Canada,
7, Victoria Street, London, S.W., August 16, 1905. ADVERTING to Colonial Office letter dated 5th May last, No. 37132/1902, † respecting lantern lectures on the United Kingdom for use in the Colonies, I now learn that the Immigration Branch of the Department of the Interior at Ottawa desires to share in the scheme as suggested, the proportionate part of the cost (which, it is understood, will be about £100) having been authorised by the Minister.
The Superintendent of the Immigration Branch has asked that he may be informed when the transaction is completed. He would also like to be furnished with the circular and syllabus already published, and any reports that may be issued from time to time upon the working of the scheme.

Enclosure 1 in No. 19.
(H. C. No. 37/1905.)
Resident Commissioner's Office, Maseru,
MY LORD,
June 14, 1905.
I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Your Excellency's despatch, No. 17/21, of the 29th May, 1905, enclosing a copy of a circular despatch from the Secretary of State, on the subject of Imperial education.
It appears to me that the illustrated lectures described in the Secretary of State's circular might be very useful in Basutoland, and there would be no insuper- able difficulty in arranging for their delivery at Government stations, and the more important missions.
I would suggest that in the event of a series of lectures being prepared for use in South Africa, Basutoland should share in the advantage and the cost.
I have, &c.,
His Excellency the Right Honourable
The Earl of Selborne, P.C., G.C.M.G.,
High Commissioner, South Africa.
