SIR,

BRITISH GUIANA.
GOVERNOR SIR F. M. HODGSON to MR. LYTTELTON,
(No. 201.)
(Received July 27, 1905.)
*
Government House, Georgetown, Demerara, July 12, 1905. WITH reference to your circular despatch of the 13th April last, on the subject of securing to the children of British Colonies a better knowledge of the United Kingdom and of other parts of the Empire, I have the honour to state that the matter has been considered in Executive Council, and the Council advised that the Combined Court be asked to provide the necessary funds for the purpose of carrying out the suggestion that appropriate lessons or lectures on the various parts of the British Empire, illustrated by lantern'slides, be given in the schools of the Colony.
2. The matter will be brought before the Combined Court at the next meeting of the Court, and I will communicate with you further as soon as possible.
To this must be added the cost of a suitable lantern and lamp, sheet, &c., and as to the last-mentioned items I should be glad to receive also Mr. Mackinder's advice and estimate.
6. As you are aware, the condition of the Colony's finances renders rigid economy necessary in all departments; and whilst I have but little doubt that the Council of Government will readily make the necessary appropriation for the intro- duction of this admirable scheme I trust that some reduction in the above estimate may be found possible.
7. Upon receipt of further advice, which I would ask may be transmitted with as little delay as possible, shall lose no time in obtaining any views that may be wanted, and in endeavouring to supply any further information which may be neces- sary for the adaptation of the lectures for use in the schools of this Colony.

GOVERNOR SIR C. BOYLE to MR. LYTTELTON.
(Received July 29, 1905.)
[Answered by No. 34.]
Government House, Mauritius, June 17, 1905.
I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your circular despatch of the 13th of April* on the subject of lectures illustrated by lantern slides for use in Colonial schools, and of the syllabus which accompanied it.
2. The object of the scheme and the offer to participate in it seem to me of so excellent a nature that no time should be lost here in taking advantage of the latter.
3. For that purpose, therefore, I would ask that a communication may be made to Mr. Mackinder invoking his assistance in the preparation of the series of lectures revised for this Colony, and in the introduction of 47 new slides of local interest to take the place of those enumerated in the lists for Lectures I., II. and VII. not applic- able to Mauritius.
4. I would ask also that Mr. Mackinder should be requested to state what infor- mation would be required for the revision of the lectures, and what material would be necessary for the preparation of the new slides, namely, whether photographs would suffice, and, if so, what their size and shape should be.

(No. 164.)
SIR,
Government House, Pietermaritzburg, Natal,
July 13, 1905. WITH reference to your circular, despatch of the 13th April,* relative to Imperial education, I have the honour to transmit to you a copy of a letter which has been addressed to the Agent-General for Natal, from which you will see that he has been instructed to arrange, in conjunction with the Agent-General for the Cape Colony, for obtaining slides illustrative of the lectures which it is proposed to deliver,
I have, &c.,
HENRY MCCALLUM.
SIR,
(P.M. 346/05.)
Enclosure in No. 16.
Prime Minister's Office, Pietermaritzburg, Natal,
July 8, 1905. I HAVE the honour to inform you that a circular despatch has been received by His Excellency the Governor from the Colonial Office in London, dated 13th April, enclosing copy of a syllabus of a course of seven lectures illustrated by lantern slides on the journey to England from the Eastern Colonies. This course of lectures was designed for use primarily in the Colonies of Ceylon, the Straits Settle- ments and Hong Kong, but the circular of the Colonial Office suggests that the greater part of the lectures and slides would be appropriate for use in other parts of the British Empire, and that special editions might be prepared for use in the different Colonies.
