"When the sedentary militia is called out for actual service volunteers from the service men' are to be first taken; and if more are wanted, they are to be taken from the first class service men, then from the second class, and lastly from the 'reserve men.' The sedentary militia are, however, in time of peace merely to be enrolled, and to be mustered once a year, and the ordinary militia duty is to be done by the volunteer corps, who are to be drilled,—the artillery during twenty days, and the other corps (except the engineers) ten days in each year, being at the same time inspected by a field officer appointed for the purpose by the Gover- nor, and paid by the province. For the time during which they are so drilled and exercised the officers and men are to receive pay from the province, the pay of a private being five shillings a-day, and five shillings a-day being allowed for each horse."
