Reports encouraging results of exami- nations in the principal schools of Freetown, and proposes that teachers should receive à bonus or grant of £2 for each pupil obtaining 40 per cent. of marks, and that prizes of £3, £2, and £1, respectively should be given to the three pupils who pass the most successful examination.
Reports that Dr. Prout's work will be adopted for use of teachers and children in the higher standards in elementary schools, and that the in- tention to prepare a text-book for the Colony will be abandoned.
Reports that the Inspector of Schools advises that "The Manual of Health and Temperance," a work already in nse, is more adapted to local condi- tions than Dr. Prout's work, which is too advanced.
Reports on instruction being given and progress made, and reports opinion of the Inspector of Schools and the Surgeon-General that no farther hand- books than those enumerated should be placed in the hands of teachers at present.
