Reports that courses of lectures were commenced in December last at Zun- geru and Lokoja, and that the attend- ance therest has averaged thirty and six respectively; at the end of the course it is proposed to hold an ex- amination and to grant certificates.

Forwards report by the Director of Education showing progress made in the teaching of hygiene since the receipt of the circular despatch of 25th August, 1903.

States, with reference to No. 4, that two publications by Dr. Dickson, of Trinidad, will be added to the exist- ing course of instruction.

Reports that the Medical Officer was prepared to give a course of lectures during the winter vacation of the schools, but was prevented by the outbreak of an epidemic of diphtheria; trusts that nothing will occur to pre- vent the lectures during the coming semaion of Saturday classes

for teachers.

Reports, in reply to No. 4, that it has not yet been possible to establish a regular system of hygienic teaching in elementary schools; Dr. Heidenatam has the matter in hand, and he will be consulted upon his return from sick leave.

Reports that a course of lectures will be started during the coming winter, and that the text-book referred to in despatch of 8th December, 1903, will be completed in about three months' time; note has been made of in- structions for a brief annual report,

States that it has not been found possible to introduce hygiene into the elementary schools, and education is in such a backward condition that there is no prospect of it for a good many years to come.

Reports that a Committee appointed to deal with the question of the teaching of hygiene in schools has recom- mended that nothing be done in the way of lectures, but some simple rules will be hung up in the schools.

States that education in the Protectorate is not sufficiently advanced to render instruction profitable, but that the matter will be brought to the notice of the Board which he proposes to appoint to formulate an educational scheme.

States that the instructions in No. + have been carried out and that lec- tures on the subject are given by Dr. Dickson.

Forwards copy of a despatch from the Administrator, St. Vincent, enclosing copies of a Tropical Hygiene Primer prepared by Dr. Branch, which will be distributed to all school teachers, with instructions to include the sub- ject in the school curriculum. Forwards copy of a scheme by Dr. Lorans, Medical Director, on which the Government has been working, and states that the Medical Director has now returned from leave and has been directed to deal with the matter.
