I AM directed by the Earl of Elgin to inform you that the question of the disposal of the instruments and permanent stores remaining at the close of the Mediterranean Fever Enquiry has been under the joint consideration of the Malta Government, the Admiralty, and the War Office.

2. The Governor of Malta states that of the appliances provided for the use of the Commission, the autoclave and incubator will be of great use to the local officials in continuing the investigations into the causes of Mediterranean fever. In these circumstances, Lord Elgin ventures to ask whether the Royal Society would have any objection to the instruments above mentioned being retained by the Govern- ment of Malta.
