No. 167.

THE EARL OF ELGIN to GOVERNOR SIR C. M. CLARKE.

(No. 82.) SIR,

*

Downing Street, June 11, 1906.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge receipt of your despatch, No. 85, of the 18th of May, and to transmit, for your information, a copy of a letterf addressed in identical terms to the Admiralty and War Office respecting the expenditure incurred by the Malta Government during the quarter ended 31st March last in connection with the Mediterranean Fever Commission.

2. You will notice that the item £195 17s. 3d. has been deleted from the account as submitted in your despatch. It has already been adjusted separately as explained in the correspondence accompanying my predecessor's despatch, No. 157, of the 8th of November last.

145

2. No arrangements appear to have been made at present in the matter. Lord Elgin is inclined, however, to think that, in all the circumstances, the Royal Society has a not unreasonable claim to the appliances named in Sir C. M. Clarke's despatch and to any other stores remaining, which the Secretary of State apprehends would probably not be of great value.

3. The Lords Commissioners will observe that the Government of Malta desires to retain the autoclave and incubator, which together cost £48 9s. If the Lords Commissioners concur in the view indicated in the preceding paragraph, it would be necessary to approach the Royal Society with a view to obtaining their consent for the retention of these instruments by the Malta Government.

4. I am to request the favour of an expression of their Lordships' views on the whole matter. A similar letter is being addressed to the War Office.

I am, &c.,

H. BERTRAM COX.
