I am, &c.,

H. BERTRAM COX.

ADMIRALTY to COLONIAL OFFICE.

(Received March 31, 1906.)

SIR,

Admiralty, March 30, 1906. WITH reference to your letter of the 10th instant,* transmitting a copy of a letter from the Royal Society concerning the composition of the Mediterranean Fever Commission and the arrangements for the continuance of its operation, I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to state, for the information of Lord Elgin, that Staff-Surgeon Clayton has been appointed to represent the Admiralty upon the Commission, in the room of Staff-Surgeon Shaw, and will leave England next month.

&c.,

I am,

C. I. THOMAS.

GOVERNOR SIR C. M. CLARKE to THE EARL OF ELGIN. (Received April 12, 1906.)

(No. 58.) MY LORD,

The Palace, Valletta, April 7, 1906. I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Your Lordship's despatch, No. 39, of the 22nd ultimo,* and to state, in reply, that although the sum of 14s. 9d., which was described as an amount twice charged to Army Funds in the account for the December quarter of 1905, was a refund of a previous overcharge, it was, nevertheless, necessary, for purposes of accounting, that it should be shown as expenditure in the local accounts of the Mediterranean Fever Commission.

2. The insertion of the charge in the statement which accompanied my despatch of the 8th ultimo,† is not, therefore, due to an inadvertence, although, as Your Lordship rightly presumed, it was not to be taken into account in calculating the War Department share of the expenditure.

I have, &c.,

CHAS. M. CLARKE,

Governor.
