(Confidential.)

Downing Street, June 7, 1906. WITH reference to my predecessor's despatch, No. 157, of the 8th of November last, and to the previous correspondence respecting the provision of scientific equipment for the Mediterranean Fever Commission, I have the honour to inform you that an enquiry has been made by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty§ as to the arrangements contemplated for disposing of the permanent stores of the Commission at the close of the enquiry.

2. You will recollect that at the outset the Royal Society undertook to provide instruments and materials to the limit of £200, and it might, therefore, claim that it is reasonably entitled to some at least of them when the enquiry is over, but it occurs to me that parts of the outfit may be of use to the officials of your Government for local work in continuation of the investigations, and I shall be glad, in the first instance, to be informed of your views on the subject.

I have, &c.,
