SIR,
THE ROYAL SOCIETY to COLONIAL OFFICE.
(Received September 13, 1905.)
Burlington House, London, W., September 13, 1905. WITH reference to your reminder* (24102, 12th September 1905), that the letter from the Colonial Office of 25th Julyt to the Royal Society has not been answered, I have to reply that there has been no meeting of the Malta Fever Com- mittee since the receipt of that letter, and that the members of the Committee being dispersed for their holidays, I regret that it has not been possible to summon them together. I feel sure that this Committee, when they meet as early as possible next month, will be pleased to know that the Government of Malta has taken steps in the direction indicated by the Royal Society in reference to the sanitary inspection of Malta, and I hope that the arrangements made may meet the requirements of the case.
With regard to the length of time the English Officer of Health, if sent out to the Colony, would probably remain there, the Committee will consider the whole question in the light of the Governor's letter of 6th July, and immediately after their meeting I will inform you of their recommendations.

Burlington House, London, W., November 7, 1905. Mediterranean Fever Commission.
DEAR MR. LUCAS,
Wrra reference to the investigation into Mediterranean fever you will remem- ber that the Royal Society made a grant of £200 (two hundred pounds) out of the Government Grant Reserve Fund towards defraying the expenses of scientific equip ment, such as instruments and materials, necessitated by the enquiry.
Í enclose a statement showing the sum expended so far by the Royal Society, from which you will see that there is an overdraft of £195 178. 3d. and that the expendi- ture for equipment alone exceeds the sum originally promised by the Royal Society.
In your letter, dated February 21st last,§ you asked us to pay the accounts in the first instance and afterwards apply for any refund of expenses incurred over and above the £200 for which the Society is responsible. Accordingly, I have to ask whether you will be good enough to present our account for £195 17s. 3d., the amount overspent by the Society.
I am,
&c., ROBERT HARRISON,
Assistant Secretary, Royal Society.

I am to request that when these contributions have been received by you the total amount of the balance of £195 17s. 3d. may be paid over to the Royal Society, the remaining one-third being debited to Malta funds in your hands.
