DEAR MR. LUCAS,

Í enclose a statement showing the sum expended so far by the Royal Society, from which will see that there is an overdraft of £195 17s. 3d. and that the expendi- ture for equipment alone exceeds the sum originally promised by the Royal Society.
In your letter, dated February 21st last,§ you asked us to pay the accounts in the first instance and afterwards apply for any refund of expenses incurred over and above the £200 for which the Society is responsible. Accordingly, I have to ask whether you will be good enough to present our account for £195 17s. 3d., the amount overspent by the Society.
I am, &c.,
