assistance of the wives, widows, and orphans of those who are serving the Empire in South Africa. This sum is in addition to the contribution of £100 from the Aborigines Rights Protection Society referred to in my despatch of the 8th January,"
2. The war in South Africa has evoked among all classes in this Colony a feeling of loyalty towards Her Most Gracious Majesty, and of patriotism for the British Empire, which has been in the highest degree gratifying, and I would call your attention to the fact that the sum now remitted includes contributions from several of the native kings and chiefs.
3. Last week a concert in aid of the funds was given in Acera by the members of the Gold Coast Volunteer Corps, which was very largely attended by influential and repre- sentative natives of the town. At this concert the name of the Queen was, I can assure you, received with such spontaneous applause as to show that the respect in which fler Majesty is held is not less marked in the Gold Coast than it is in the other parts of Her Majesty's wide dominions,
4. I transmit a draft on the Crown Agents for the sum of £500. The contributions were given for the Mansion House Fund No. 4, which it is understood is a fund for the relief of wives and children of soldiers and sailors, and I should be glad if they could be handed to that fund.

Thompson, on behalf of the subscribers, for. transmission, and was by him remitted through the Crown Agents for the Colonies to the Lord Mayor's Fund for the Transvaal
War.
2. I have seen the leading members of the Committee, and they say that if they had known of the existence of the British Empire League Fund they would have pre- ferred the subscriptions to have been paid thereto. As it is, they can only ask that the balance now being collected locally, about £30, may be so paid. The lists will be closed this week, and I will then advise Your Excellency of the actual amount to be se treated, and request the Crown Agents to hold it at the disposal of the Secretary of State.
3. It is indeed most creditable to the people of this Colony, in view of its recent suffering and loss, that such a sum should have been collected for this object, and it serves to show the loyalty and patriotic feeling which exist in this small dependency of the Crown.

F. M. HODGSON,
