Government House, Hong Kong, March 29, 1900. I HAVE the honour to inform you that a vote of $50,000 from the public funds of this Colony towards the Lord Mayor's Fund in connection with the war in South Africa, was unanimously agreed to at the necting of the Legislative Council held on the 15th ultimo,

2. I attach for your information an extract from the press account of the proceedings at that meeting. From the speeches made on that occasion it will be seen The Daily that the public spirit shown by the whole of Her Majesty's subjects in Hong Kong, Press, Feb. irrespective of race, was fully represented by the unofficial members of the Legislative

Council, by whom the grant of this sum of money was originally proposed,

3. The total sum subscribed by the community for the Lord Mayor's South Afrien War Fund, including the vote by the Legislative Council amounts now to $153,166 67c. which amount has been made up in the following manner :-

Downing Street, May 1, 1900. I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch of the 7th April, forwarding a despatch from the Administrator of St. Vincent, giving par- ticulars with regard to the sum of £200 already contributed by the people of St. Vincent for the relief of the sufferers from the war and remitted to the Lord Mayor's Fund through the Crown Agents for the Colonies, and requesting that any further contributions from St. Vincent may be paid to the British Empire League Fund for the assistance of sufferers belonging to or connected with the Colonial forces taking part in the war in South Africa.

The further remittance of £32 since received has accordingly been paid to that Fund, and I must, in replying to your despatch, again express my appreciation of the loyal and patriotic spirit shown by the people of St. Vincent in contributing so gener- ously to the relief of the sufferers from the war.

Downing Street, May 4, 1900. I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Sir H. Blake's despatch of the 29th March last.† reporting that the Legislative Council of Hong Kong has unanimously nureel to a vote of $50.000 from the public funds of the Colony in aid of the Lord Mayor's Funl, in connection with the war in South Africa, and that the total sum, subscribed by the community, amounted at the date of that despatch to $153,166-67.

In reply, I desire to express my warm appreciation of the loyalty and generosity shown by the Colony.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch of the 8th of April, with one from the Administrator of St. Lucia, stating that, so far as he has been able to ascertain, the subscribers to the funds for the relief of the sufferers from the war in South Africa in that Island fully concur in the suggestion that their sub- scriptions should be devoted to the British Empire League Fund for assisting the widows and orphans of men of the Colonial forces taking part in the war and disabled members of those forces, and I have to inform you that the amount subscribed will be applied as desired.

GOLD COAST.

MR. CHAMBERLAIN to GOVERNOR SIR F. M. HODGSON. (No. 221.)

Downing Street, May 4, 1900.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch of the 19th of March, transmitting a draft for £500, which has been subscribed on the Gold Coast by Europeans and natives as a contribution to the Mansion House. Fund for the relief of the wives and children of soldiers and sailors engaged in the war in South Africa.

2. I have laid your despatch before the Queen, and I am commanded by Her Majesty to inform you that she is much gratified at the generosity, patriotism, and loyalty of her subjects on the Gold Coast.

3. The Crown Agents for the Colonies have been instructed to pay the sum of £500 to the credit of the Mansion House Fund.
