DEAR SIR,
April 5, 1900. WITH reference to your letter of the 17th ultimo, in which you requested to be supplied with certain information connected with the landing place of the Pacific Cable at Vancouver Island, I am directed to inform you that the High Commissioner duly communicated a copy thereof to the Canadian Government, with a request that enquiry might be made into the several points which were raised by you.
I am now to quote, for your information, a copy of a cablegram which has to-day reached Lord Strathcona from the Premier of Canada on the subject:

Advised by Government Engineer Roy, who is perfectly familiar with San Juan Harbour, that head of bay suitable site for station. Will be within half mile of suit- able landing place for Cable. Open all year round for vessels, thus affording ample facilities for supplies. Government has telegraph line in operation from San Juan to Victoria, there connects with Canadian-Pacific system, which connects with Cable from Vancouver Island to mainland. Advised that Admiralty maps accurately de- scribe locality. Will send tracing of Canadian map Vancouver Island. Buildings in locality wooden."
