Abstract of Tenders for Survey and Soundings under Contract No. 4, with notes thereon.
MEMORANDUM,
The Silvertown Company make two alternative tenders :—
Alternative No. 1 is for the despatch of their vessel from London on the 1st March, 1901, or thereafter, at a cost of £16,300 for the contract work, with an additional charge of £60 a day for soundings extra to contract. This tender is ']LI for acceptance until 31st March, 1901.
Alternative No. 2 is for the despatch of their vessel from Sydney, New South Wales, on the 1st January, 1901, or thereafter, at a cost of £10,800 for the contract work, with an additional charge of £60 a day for soundings extra to contract. This tender is open until the 1st October, 1900,
The Telegraph Construction Company's tender is for the despatch of their vessel within six weeks of the execution of the contract, at a cost of £21,500 for the contract work, with an additional charge of £90 a day for soundings extra to contract, Their offer is made subject to the condition that one, at least, of their tenders for Cable Contracts Nos. 1, 2, and 3 is accepted, and it is open for acceptance until the 14th September, 1900.
Messrs. Siemens Bros.' tender is for the despatch of their vessel one month after receipt of order, at a cost of £40,000, with a charge of £60 a day for soundings extra to contract. Their tender is open for, acceptance until the 14th October, 1900.
NOTE ON THE ABOVE,
It does not appear necessary to consider closely these tenders for the survey and Sounding operations until the Committer have arrived at a decision as to the acceptability or otherwise of the Cable Terulars.
We are of opinion, however, that it would most likely be preferable to employ the ship of the contractor who carries out the most important cable contract.
It will, too, be expedient to ascertain, should tenders for the cable be accepted, the particulars of the ship the despatch of which is contemplated in each tender.

SIR,
4, Great Winchester Street, London, E.C. August 20, 1900.
SINCE our Report of the 17th instant was written, it has occurred to us that certain combinations we have made of the figures in the tenders of the Silvertown Company and of the Telegraph Construction Company might be of some service if placed before the Committee.
The date of completion of the above depends upon the time beyond 31st July, 1902,
required by the Telegraph Construction Company to undertake Contracts Nos, 2 and 3
in addition to Contract No. 1.
