16. The mails are conveyed to and from England by the two lines of steamers, the Union Line and the Castle Line, which run between England and the Cape of Good Hope. The number of calls in a year is 13 in each direction.
17. St. Helena is situated within the tropics; but the south-east trade wind, which blows almost without intermission throughout the year, keeps the temperature compara- tively low, and the Island is very healthy. The death-rate in 1892 was only 12.6 per 1,000. Even in Jamestown, which is situated in a deep and narrow valley, the highest summer temperature is seldom more than 82°. In the country the temperature is usually 10° less than in the town; but the Hospital is in the town, and the Lady Nurse Superin- tendent must be prepared to find that it is a long climb up into the country.
18. The Lady Nurse Superintendent will be provided with a free first-class passage to the Island on signing the usual agreement, by which she will be bound to repay to the St. Helena Government the cost of the passage in the event of her relinquishing the appointment within three years of the date of her arrival in the Island for any other reason than mental or physical infirmity. Under the Colonial Regulations, no allowance is made for outfit or incidental travelling expenses beyond the cost of the passage out by mail steamer, and no return passage is granted in any circumstances.
19. Half salary will be payable from the date of embarcation from this country, and
full salary from the date of arrival in St. Helena,
Colonial Office,
