In this outline the word-

DEFINITIONS.

plant" includes generally all members of the vegetable kingdom or any

part of a plant;

disease" includes parasitic insects, fungi or plants; package or case "' includes any box, bag or parcel; packing includes

any material used as such;

earth, soil, straw, paper, cork or any other

"land" includes fields, orchards, gardens, plantations and generally,

any cultivated or uncultivated, open or enclosed ground;

owner or occupier "includes the proprietor, lessee, superintendent

or other person in actual charge of any cultivated or uncultivated land.

AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH.

Customs Act, 1901-1910.

The export of any fruit affected by, or that has been in contact with, San José Scale is prohibited. Quarantine Act, 1908-1912.

The Governor-General may appoint quarantine and other officers for carrying out this Act and may make arrangements with State Governments to aid in this. He may proclaim ports of entry, appoint places of quarantine, prohibit the introduction of any noxious insect or pest or any article containing such, prohibit removal from one part of the Commonwealth to another of any plant, declare any district quarantined, and any plant, etc., in such district subject to quarantine. The Governor-General may exempt any plant from the provisions of this Act.

Plants may be landed only at a port of entry and before being landed must have a permit granted by a quarantine officer, who must inspect imported plants before delivery. If such plants are not free from disease, they may be quaran- tined and, if necessary, destroyed at the importer's or owner's expense. Any plants imported in contravention of this Act are forfeit.

Proclamation, 1909.

Meal and Grain Beetles (Tenebrionidae) are declared insect pests under this

Proclamation, 1909.

The following are declared insect pests of plants :---

Tetranychus spp. (Red spider and other Mites). Adoretus umbrosus (May-bug of Hawaii and Japan). APHIDAE (Peach Aphis, Phylloxera, etc.).

AUGUILLULIDAE (Eelworms).

Pyralis farinalis (Meal moth).

BUPRESTIDAE (Borer beetles).

Cacoecia pp. (Apple and Orange moths).

Cerambycidae (Longicorn beetles).

Cydia pomonella (Codling moth).

Mayetiola destructor (Hessian fly).

CHRYSOMELIDAE (Leaf-eating beetles).

Malacosoma americana (Tent caterpillar).

COCCIDAE (Chinese Mealy-bug and other Scale insects).

Conogethes punctiferalis (Peach moth).

CURCULIONIDAE (Fuller's Rose beetle, Sphenophorus, Weevils).

Diatraea saccharalis (Sugar-cane and Corn-stalk borer).
