THE GOVERNOR to THE SECRETARY OF STATE.
(Received 9th February, 1915.)
Government House, Georgetown, Demerara, SIR,
18th January, 1915. In continuation of my despatch No. 380, of the 10th September,* I have the honour to transmit a report by Dr. J. E. A. Ferguson on the experiment with beta-naphthol in the treatment of ankylostomiasis in this Colony.
I have, &c.,
WALTER EGERTON,
Governor.
Enclosure in No. 65.
HONOURABLE The Surgeon-General,
AT Pla. Diamond 130 persons (not 163 as stated in my minute of 3rd October, 1914) infected with ankylostomes began to take daily doses of beta- naphthol from 21st September, 1914.
2. The doses were the same as those given in the daily treatment with thymol; viz., gr. 10 for adults, etc. The drug was given in cachets made by our nurses until "palatinoids" of it were obtained from Messrs. Oppenheimer through their local agents.
Io
3. None of the patients made any complaint of unpleasant symptoms. such doses beta-naphthol is as well borne as thymol, and perhaps more easily.
4. The doses could not be given regularly every day, on account of other calls on the time of the hospital staff. For this reason the results should be judged from the number of doses taken rather than from the duration of the treatment. 5. These patients had never been treated previously with any anthelmintic. 6. Many of them are blacks employed in the Estate factory, accustomed to wear boots, and less intensely infected than the rest, who are agricultural labourers. 7. The former class of cases supplied many of the cures recorded below, those not yet cured being mostly of the latter class.

Government House, 25th January, 1915.
I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch, Miscella neous, of the 23rd December, informing me of the offer of the International Health Commission of the services of Dr. B. E. Washburn, of the United States, as local I should be exceedingly director of the ankylostomiasis campaign in Trinidad glad of Dr. Washburn's services, especially as Colonel Dodd returns to England by this mail.
2. I regret very much that I had not the opportunity of meeting Dr. Howard, the West Indian Director of the Commission, on his way to British Guiana, and I had hoped to have seen him after his return from there, but I am informed he went on to the United States. I should have been very glad of his advice as to carrying on the work.
3. In the meantime I have appointed Dr. Campbell, the Assistant Medical Officer, to act as Medical Officer in Charge of the campaign here in the place of Colonel Dodd, but I propose to consult Dr. Washburn, if he comes here, before making any final recommendation to you.
I have, &c.,

2. Dr. Hood, in forwarding these reports, minutes as follows:—
46
Ankylostomiasis is very prevalent throughout Nigeria, but it appears
not to inconvenience the native population sufficiently to cause them to seek medical assistance. The root of the infection is lack of sanitation, which involves time and money to overcome."

Enclosure 1 in No. 67.
Northern Provinces, Nigeria, Principal Medical Office,
Zungeru, 12th January, 1915.
DURING the year 1914, in practically every medical station, investigation as
to the prevalence of entozoal infection has been carried out.
From August onwards the constant changes in the medical personnel of stations, necessitated by the war, have somewhat hampered the work, and the figures I am able to supply are not as complete as I had hoped.
