I attach a tabulated return embracing all the investigations, and the figures are very similar to those obtained last year, except for the fact that the numbers examined are far larger, hence of more value.
In the Senior Sanitary Officer's comments, which I enclose, he is of opinion that the process of improvement depende mainly on the education of the native in sanitary matters; the process, as he remarks, must, necessarily be slow, and whatever diminished incidence of infection may be attained will not be immediately apparent. In Government prisons alons, perhaps, can results of systematic treatment (such as is now generally adopted) be seen, and it may later be possible to establish clinics for treatment, on a larger scale than is now practicable, of these and other ailments.
Until such is practicable, no effort will be spared to carry on the present system of prevention and treatment in an extended manner; the results of such treatment are reported as being most encouraging.
It will be noted that only thirty-four children have been examined--the reason for this small number is that it is most difficult to get the native community to submit their children to medical treatment.
No European has been found infected.
