No. 281 (69 ft., 12th January) :-"Milk, nil; mammæ protruding, mounted on a prominence; uterus not examined, but a big foetus, if [any] present, would have been found." In a separate note, sketches of the external genitals are given, and from these it appears that the genital slit was 3 ft. 6 in. long, with a width of 5 in. behind, and 6 in. just behind the vagina. The anus was 5 in. long and 1.5 in. wide, its anterior margin being placed 6 in. behind the posterior edge of the genital slit and 24 in. behind that of the vagina. The mammary slits were separated anteriorly by an interval of 18 in.: the prominences which protruded from them and upon which the mamme were placed, were 4 in. in diameter transversely, while each mamma measured 1.5 in. by 2 in.

mammary glands; rotten carcase."

* The ovary connected with cornu containing fœtus had a large corpus luteum; the other ovary was small but had a small corpus luteum, or scar, quite distinct from the corpus luteum of impregnation. Both ovaries were functional in this case (see Appendix 1, p. 179).

Milk? Mammæ ? (The following note, although written opposite No. 197, appears to refer to No. 195, mentioned on page 111 above :-"Large milk glands, with some milk; uterus not enlarged, cornu 5 in. diameter. Uterus small-bored, so could not have held a large foetus; internally folded as if impregnated, but no foetus was found." 270 (74-25 ft., 13th January) :—“Milk, nil: mammæ absolutely retracted;

contained a male foetus about 8 ft. 3 in. long."

15 (75 ft., 26th November):

:-"Poor condition. The mamme were small and deeply withdrawn into their sheaths (each 12 in. long), which were tightly closed on them so that they were difficult to reach with the fingers. The very muscular and expansive orifice of the vagina was remarkably swollen externally," which condition suggested heat." The muscular vagina measured 5 ft. 5 in. from the vulva to the well-marked constriction of the os uteri. The corpus uteri con- tained a male foetus 4 ft. 6 in. long, and, measured from the os to the fundus, was 5ft. long; its walls were thick and very vascular The pregnant cornu was, including the width of the fundus of the uterus, 10 ft. long, and it communicated freely with the corpus uteri; its ovary "had a deeply coloured swollen mass, evidently corresponding to an 'ovarian scar (or corpus luteum). The other cornu was much smaller and measured, exclusive of the width of the fundus,
