MR. A. B. KEITH (COLONIAL OFFICE) to MR. W. L. GRIFFITH (SECRETARY TO THE HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR CANada).
[Answered by No. 76,]
DEAR MR. GRIFFITH,
Downing Street, 18 February, 1913. WITH reference to Sir Charles Lucas's letter of the 16th of February, 1911,* written on behalf of the Visual Instruction Committee, I have to transmit to you, to be laid before the High Commissioner for Canada, copies of two further books of lantern lectures, entitled respectively "Australasia" and the "Sea Road to the East," which have now been issued by the Committee. A book on South Africa is also being written.
The lectures on Canada will probably be issued during the coming summer, and the Committee have to thank you for the help you have so kindly given to Mr. A. J. Sargent, who is preparing the lectures, and who came to you with a letter from Sir Charles Lucas.
A proof of these lectures is enclosed, and the Committee would be very glad of any observations or suggestions which may occur to you if you would be so good as to glance through the proof. Each lecture, as in the case of those already published, will be illustrated by about sixty slides, though these slides are not yet definitely indicated.
Yours very truly,
A. BERRIEDALE KEITH.

MR. T. S. NIGHTINGALE (SECRETARY TO THE HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR THE UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA) to MR. A. B. KEITH (Colonial OffICE).
DEAR MR. KEITH,
(Received 21 February, 1913.)
[Answered by No. 151.]
32, Victoria Street, Westminster, S.W.,
20th February, 1913.
THANKS for your letter of the 18th instant,* and for the copies of the two further books of lantern lectures which have been issued by the Visual Instruction Committee. These books have been seen with interest.
We have not heard anything from the Union Government in regard to Sir Charles Lucas's letter to Mr. Malan of June, 1911. I suppose it has been over- looked by the Minister.
I am sorry to say that I do not know anybody over here who has a collection of South African paintings. There are no doubt plenty of people who have one
or two pictures, but I am not aware of any representative collection.
I may, however, mention that there is a South African artist, Mr. R. Gwelo Goodman, whose address is 56, Bedford Gardens, Kensington, living over here, and it is possible that he may have some South African pictures which he would be willing to show. I have no doubt that if he were written to and told that the suggestion of applying to him came from this Office, he would be glad to show any pictures he had.
Yours very truly,
T. S. NIGHTINGALE.

DEAR CAPTAIN COLLINS,]
[Answered by No. 75.]
Downing Street, 18 February, 1913. WITH reference to the letter of the 16th of February, 1911,* addressed to you by Sir Charles Lucas on behalf of the Visual Instruction Committee of this Office, and to your letter in reply, of the [25th] [27th] of February, 1911,† I have to transmit to you, to be laid before the High Commissioner for [New Zealand], [the Commonwealth of Australia], a copy of a book of lantern lectures on Australasia which has been prepared for the Committee by Mr. A. J. Sargent, together with a separate list of the slides.
Mr. Sargent, as you may remember, came to you with a letter of introduction from Sir Charles Lucas, and the Committee wish to express their thanks to you and to your staff for the great help given to Mr. Sargent both in the collection of information and illustrations and in the revision of the letterpress of the lectures.
I have to enclose also a copy of a further book of lectures, entitled the "Sea Road to the East," which treats of the possessions in the Mediterranean and in the East.
The High Commissioner may be interested to learn that the Committee hope to issue lectures on Canada and Newfoundland during the coming summer, and a book on South Africa before the end of the year.
Yours very truly,
A. BERRIEDALE KEITH.
