Canada.

BRITISH COLUMBIA.-By the "Birds Protection Act, 1903," it is unlawful to take or kill any bird whatsoever, or to take the nests or eggs, except crows, magpies, hawks, owls, woodpeckers, blue jays, and the ordinary game birds.

MANITOBA.-By "The Insectivorous Birds Act," R.S.M. c. 75, s. 1, it is unlawful to take or kill, or sell any bird, or to take the nest, young or eggs, except eagles, falcons, goshawks, sharp-shinned hawks, duck hawks, pigeon hawks, blackbirds, cow birds, English sparrows, ravens, loons, rusty grackle, purple grackle, coopers or chicken hawks, cranes, cormorants, mergansers, pelicans, crows, wild swans, wild geese, wavies, or snow geese and certain game.

NORTH-WEST TERRITORIES (also ALBERTA AND SASKATCHEWAN).—Substantially as in Manitoba. See "The Useful Birds Ordinance, 1902."

ONTARIO. By "An Act for the Protection of Insectivorous and other Birds," R.S.O., cap. 289, all birds except hawks, crows, blackbirds and English sparrows, are similarly protected.

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND.-By an Act of 1884 (Acts cap. 8), wild fowl, viz., wild geese, brant geese, wild ducks of all kinds, loons, coots, divers, gulls, sea pigeons, and all other aquatic birds, may not be pursued between sunset and sunrise.

QUEBEC. By section 2316 of the Revised Statutes, a close season is established from 1st March to 1st November, for any of the birds known as perchers, such as swallows, kingbirds, warblers, flycatchers, woodpeckers, whip-poor-wills, finches (song sparrows, red birds, indigo birds, &c.), cow buntings, titmice, goldfinches, grives (robins, wood thrushes, &c.), kinglets, bobolinks, grakles, grosbeaks, humming birds, cuckoos, &c., except eagles, falcons, hawks and other falconidae, owls, kingfishers, crows, ravens, waxwings (récollets), shrikes, jays, magpies, sparrows, and starlings.

NEW BRUNSWICK.-By the "Game Act, 1909," it is an offence at all seasons to hunt or take the eggs or nest of any seagull, pheasant or any small birds which frequent the fields and woods, except such birds as to which special provisions are made, and except also blackbirds, crows, and English sparrows.

NOVA SCOTIA. "The Game Act, 1908," prohibits the killing, sale, trapping or taking the nest or eggs of the woodpecker, swallow, marten, robin, thrush, sparrow, blue bird, or any other of the small birds and birds of song which frequent gardens, fields or clearings.

All the Canadian Provinces provide close seasons for game birds.

NEWFOUNDLAND.-By Act No. 17 of 1902 it is unlawful for anyone to take or possess any game or other wild or migrating bird, except wild geese, or the

eggs of any such bird, between January 12th and August 20th,

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE.-By Act No. 42 of 1899 power is given to protect birds within the area of any Municipality or Divisional Council which may petition for that purpose.

NATAL-By Acts Nos. 33 of 1896 and 13 of 1904 killing, catching or taking the eggs of the following birds is prohibited. The list can be extended by the Governor-in- Council.

Wagtail.

White stork.

Homing or carrier pigeons.

The tick bird may, by Act No. 26 of 1910, be removed from the operation of the law by Proclamation.

ZULULAND.-Proclamation No. 2 of 1897 establishes close seasons for game birds. and makes it unlawful to capture, kill, hunt or permit the ostrich, secretary bird and turkey-buzzard, known as the insingisi.

wilfully disturb without special TRANSVAAL AND ORANGE RIVER COLONY.-The Game Laws regulate the hunting of ostriches and a large number of game birds.

Eastern.

Crown Colonies and Protectorates.

CEYLON.-Ordinance No. 1 of 1909 completely protects kingfishers of all species, large white egret, little egret, plumed egret, blackheaded oriole, woodpeckers of all species. orange minevet, trogon, paradise flycatcher, painted thrush, Indian roller (blue jay), hill (Brahmin) myna, and hornbill, by prohibiting the killing, taking possession, sale, or export of any part of such birds; and gives a close season to the whistling and cotton teal.

STRAITS SETTLEMENTS.-By Ordinance 16 of 1904, it is lawful for the Governor-in- Council to prohibit the killing or taking of any wild bird either within any specified area or absolutely; or to establish a close time for any wild bird. Licences are required to kill or take (except when destroying crops) a number of birds. These birds are scheduled by their Malay names, and in those cases where English equivalents are given appear to be game-birds. The Argus pheasant is among them.

FEDERATED MALAY STATES.-Perak Enactments 15 of 1904 and 5 of 1908, Negri Sembilan Enactments 15 of 1904 and 5 of 1908, and Selangor Enactments 14 of 1904 and 5 of 1908, prohibit the killing, taking, possession, or sale without a licence of a number of wild birds, shown in the fourth schedule. A close season or a breeding season

may be declared for birds in the fourth and fifth schedules. Eggs are protected during a declared close or breeding season. Negri Sembilan are as follows :—
