WESTERN AUSTRALIA.-Act No. 36 of 1892 enables a close season to be proclaimed

for the following:-Wild ducks of any species, teal, emu, black

swan, wild geese, bustard

or wild turkey, bittern, swamp hen, bronze-winged and other pigeons, gnow, magpie, quail, rottnest and other snipe, booby, frigate bird, noddy, pelican, curlew, sea pie, sea snipe, mutton bird, red bill, laughing jackass. The Act also enables reserves to be established.

PAPUA.—Ordinance 15 of 1908 prohibits tuking, selling, or exporting birds of dise, goura pigeons, and ospreys. This list can, by No. 13 of 1909, be varied by

Proclamation.

New Zealand.

Act No. 6 of 1908 permits the taking aud killing of native and imported game only from 1st May to 31st July and provides a close season of the whole of 1910 and every third

year thereafter. The Governor has also power by notification to declare absolute or partial protection for the birds in the sixth schedule. The eggs of all these birds (including native and imported game) are protected by a penalty not exceeding ten pounds. There is power to regulate or prohibit exportation of the plumage and skins of non-edible birds, but no action has yet been taken (January, 1910). The Governor has wide power
