States, with reference to the fact that no instructions have been given to the Crown Agents by the Mauritius Government for the payment of the sums voted annually, that Lord Crewe has not felt justified in asking for pay- ment of the arrears, but requests that in the case of any colony not giving the necessary instructions they will call attention to the matter.
Acknowledges the receipt of Sir Charles Lucas's gemi-official letter of 27th November, and states that now that the meaning of Lord Elgin's circular despatch is understood, the research work in British Guiana will be con. ducted on the lines suggested and the Government will assist the Committee in every way.
Explains with reference to the Secretary of State's circular despatch of July 13th, 1908, that the Superintending Medical Officer has no observations to make on the reports beyond a reference to their interesting nature, and a desire for larger salaries for himself and colleagues, so that they might devote more time to research; and adds that he will send a circular in the sense desired to the various medical officers of the island.
Forwards a copy of a report by the Principal Medical Officer submitting the report of the Bacteriological De- partment for the half-year ended 31st December last.
Points out that the expense of main- taining the laboratory for experimental work in tropical medicine is increas- ing and is making demands on his private resources, and asks for an additional grant of £100 a year, for a year or two, from the Tropical Dis- eases Research Fund.
