ELGIN.

SIR,

Downing Street, 3 April, 1908. In my Circular despatch of even date, I have transmitted to you copies of the Report of the Advisory Committee for the Tropical Diseases Research Fund for 1907. It will be observed that in that Report Dr. Castellani's investigations into yaws and syphilis have been curtailed by the omission of the details of his experi- ments on monkeys. This has been done to obviate the possibility of hostile criticism from the not inconsiderable body of opinion in this country which is opposed to experiments of this character.

any

I request that you will cause Dr. Castellani to be informed of the reason for the omission of part of his report, and will authorise him to publish it in scientific journal, if he so desires.

I have, &c.,

MR. A. H. MILNE to SIR C. P. LUCAS. (Received 1 May, 1908.)

DEAR SIR CHARLES,

[See No. 24.]

B 10, Exchange Buildings, Liverpool, 30 April, 1908. REFERRING to the official letter of the Colonial Office, dated 2nd September last, signed by yourself, I should be glad to know whether there is a possibility of the School receiving the balance of the grant referred to therein, viz., £250 for the period from the 1st of October, 1907, to the 31st of March, 1908,

I do not wish to write officially on the subject if it can be avoided, as the School are most grateful for the money and help that the Government has already given. So you will excuse me addressing you informally.
