2. The Secretary of State is interested in the scheme, and would, therefore, be glad that you should receive all possible facilities for carrying out the duty which has been entrusted to you; he hopes that this letter may conduce to that end.

Mr. H. J. MACKINDER to CROWN AGENTS.
GENTLEMEN,
2, Tanfield Court, Temple, London, E.C., 24th July, 1909. On the 27th April of last year the Commissioner of Somaliland wrote to the Secretary of State for the Colonies (letter No. 17463) asking that a series of enlarge- ments of photographs taken by Mr. Fisher in Somaliland might be supplied to that Protectorate, and suggesting that the cost of the enlargements could be borne by the Protectorate Funds. I have now ascertained that three copies of each of a dozen suitable enlargements could be supplied for some £20, exclusive of the cost of freight and insurance. If you approve of this expenditure on behalf of the Protectorate, would you give me definite instructions to have this order put in hand?
Yours, &c.,
H. J. MACKINDER.

DEAR MR. MERCER,
Enclosure in No. 99.
Mr. HUGH FISHER to Mr. MERCER.
13a, Margaret Street,
I
Cavendish Square, W., August 5th, 1909. I AM very sorry to say I am obliged to keep to the house for a week through an abrased heel. A new shoe started the damage on the day I last saw you. hoped I should be able to ride over it but my doctor this morning insists that for me to avoid serious imprisonment it is essential I should give the foot complete rest
for a week.
With regard to the work on English subjects you may like to know how far I have got things in train.
Portsmouth.-Mr. Nicholson, Sir John Fisher's secretary at the Admiralty, has promised, if practicable, to send me a permit to take views at the dockyard.
Cardiff for South Wales Collieries. Mr. Russell Rea, M.P., has asked the manager of his firm to give me introductions to the best collieries in the district.
Steelworks, Armour-plates, Gun-making, Shipbuilding.-Messrs. Vickers, Sons, & Maxim have given me two interviews and have promised to send me permits for taking views at their works at Sheffield and at Barrow, and a long chat with their artist has given me an idea of the kind of subjects I should be able to photograph there.
Cotton. Mr. E. L. Hartley, who, Mr. Mackinder told me, is well known in the district, has given me information about this industry and suggested subjects for its illustration at Oldham and Blackburn.
Stockbreeding-Sir Thomas H. Elliott, of the Board of Agriculture, to whom I had a letter from Mr. Mackinder, is out of town, but his secretary has put me on to the Royal Agricultural Society, from whose secretary I expect to obtain useful information.
Sincerely yours,
A. HUGH FISHER.
