Mercers' Hall, London, February 1, 1907. I AM desired to inform you that the Mercers' Company has granted a sum of £1,000 to the Imperial Institute for scientific research in regard to the economic products of British Colonies and Protectorates, to be expended under the direction of the Managing Committee subject to the control of the Secretary of State for the Colonies.
I shall be obliged by your intimating to me to whom the money should be paid for the purpose indicated."

Downing Street, February 7, 1907. I AM directed by the Earl of Elgin to acknowledge the receipt of of the 1st instant, intimating that the Mercers' Company have granted a sum of your letter £1,000 to the Imperial Institute for scientific research in regard to the economic products of British Colonies and Protectorates, to be expended under the direction of the Managing Committee subject to the control of the Secretary of State for the Colonies. I am to request you to express to the Company his Lordship's high sense of their timely generosity.
This gift will undoubtedly prove of the greatest value to the Crown Colonies and Protectorates and to the general interests of British trade; and, if the Company see no objection, Lord Elgiň proposes to publish a notice of their grant in the newspapers.
The money should be paid to the Crown Agents for the Colonies, Whitehall Gardens, to be placed to the credit of the Imperial Institute Fund.
