letter

I AM directed by the Earl of Elgin to acknowledge the receipt of

Downing Street, February 7, 1907. of the 1st instant,† intimating that the Mercers' Company have granted a sum of

your £1,000 to the Imperial Institute for scientific research in regard to the economic products of British Colonies and Protectorates, to be expended under the direction of the Managing Committee subject to the control of the Secretary of State for the Colonies. I am to request you to express to the Company his Lordship's high sense of their timely generosity.

This gift will undoubtedly prove of the greatest value to the Crown Colonies and Protectorates and to the general interests of British trade; and, if the Company see no objection, Lord Elgin proposes to publish a notice of their grant in the newspapers.

The money should be paid to the Crown Agents for the Colonies, Whitehall Gardens, to be placed to the credit of the Imperial Institute Fund.

I am, &c.,

C. P. LUCAS.
