Downing Street, February 4, 1907. WITH reference to Mr. Griffith's letter of the 17th and to the reply from this Department of the 19th ultimo,* I am directed by the Earl of Elgin to inform you that Mr. H. J. COLONIAL OFFICE to MR. H. J. MACKINDER.

Downing Street, February 4, 1907.

WITH reference to my letter of the 19th ultimo and to the interview at this Office on the 31st ultimo on the subject of the adaptation, for use in Canada, of the lantern lectures on the United Kingdom, I am directed by the Earl of Elgin to enclose, for your information and guidance, the accompanying copy of a letter§ which has been addressed to the High Commissioner for Canada.

His Lordship approves of your proceeding with the adaptation of the lectures forthwith.

SIR,

No. 125. NATAL.

COLONIAL OFFICE to MR. H. J. MACKINDER.

Downing Street, January 24, 1907. WITH reference to the letter from this Department of the 13th January, 1906, § enclosing a set of photographs of Durban Harbour, together with copies of correspondence on the subject of a proposed South African edition of the lantern lectures on the United Kingdom, I am directed by the Earl of Elgin to inform you that a letter | has been received from the Agent-General for Natal enquiring what progress has been made in the matter.

Subject to any observations which you may desire to offer, it is proposed to inform Sir William Arbuckle in reply, that in order to simplify the question of copyright of the adapted editions, it was decided to invite one Colonial Government in each of the groups mentioned in Mr. Lyttelton's Circular despatch of the 13th April, 1905,1 to become responsible for the initial cost of such edition; and that owing to a difficulty which has arisen as to which of the South African Colonies should assume the responsibility for the preparation of the particular edition, nʊ definite steps towards its adaptation have yet been taken.

COLONIAL OFFICE to INDIA OFFICE.

Downing Street, February 5, 1907.

ADVERTING to the letter from this Department of the 1st December last and to previous correspondence on the subject of the adaptation for use in India of the lantern lectures on the United Kingdom prepared by Mr. H. J. Mackinder, I am directed by the Earl of Elgin to state, for the information of the Secretary of State for India, that Mr. Mackinder has represented that, as material for the slides to accompany the special edition is accumulating, it would be desirable that the manu- facturers' accounts incurred should be met.

2.

I am to request, therefore, that you will move Mr. Secretary Morley, should he see no objection, to cause Mr. Mackinder to be supplied with funds for this purpose, it being understood that the work will be completed and that the whole account will fall within the financial year ending on the 31st March next. The enclosure to your letter of the 3rd of August¶ states that the cost of the lectures and slides will be borne by provincial revenues and the initial cost of adaptation by the Government of India.
