LAW OFFICERS to FOREIGN OFFICE.

MY LORD,

Lincoln's Inn, July 19, 1865. We are honoured with your Lordship's commands, signified in Mr. Hammond's letter of the 23rd of June ultimo, stating that with reference to our report of 18th March* and our previous reports on the case of the "Chesapeake " he was directed by your Lordship to transmit to us, together with the previous papers, a letter from the June 21, Colonial Office and its enclosures respecting the trial and acquittal of Lieutenant Seely 1865, Forme before an Admiralty Court in New Brunswick on a charge of piracy, and to request Papers. that we would take the same into our consideration and favour your Lordship with C.O., May our opinion thereupon.

In obedience to your Lordship's commands we have taken this matter into considera- No. 181. tion and have the honour to

Report

That as far as we can form an opinion from the meagre report of this important trial contained in the extract of the newspaper which is submitted to us, we are of opinion that the judge rightly laid down the law to the jury, and we see no reason to doubt that the verdict which, after ten hours' consideration, the jury found was under the circumstances right and proper.

We have, &c. (Signed)

Earl Russell, K.G.,
