Payments are being made from time to time through the Crown Agents on account of the above charges, the estimate for which (exclusive of the solicitors' professional charges for work in this country) is approximately £30,000.
I am informed that the Company have offered to the Arbitrator nominated by them a fee of £6,825.
The Government Solicitors have informed Messrs. Druces and Attlee, the Company's Solicitors, that they do not concur in this payment, which I regard as unreasonable; and it will be necessary for you, in due course, to take steps for taxing the Company's bill of costs.

MR. LYTTELTON to GOVERNOR SIR J. ANDERSON.
(Confidential.)
SIR,
Downing Street, August 11, 1905. WITH reference to your telegram of the 29th ultimot and to my reply of to- day's date I have the honour to transmit to you, for your information, the accom- panying copies of correspondence§ respecting the grant of compensation to the London staff of the Tanjong Pagar Dock Company.
You will gather that in arriving at the conclusion stated in the second enclosure
I have gone on the analogy of the rules followed by the Colonial Government in the case of abolition of office-excluding, of course, the 5 years' climate bonus, which is inapplicable to the present case-and I have no doubt that this is the course which you would have recommended.
I know of nothing in the condition of tenure of the offices held by the Directors and the members of the London Committee which would legally or equitably entitle them to compensation, and if the Company think otherwise, the matter may be brought before the Court under Section 4 of the Ordinance. I presume that in giving notice to the Company as reported in your telegram of the 10th ultimo, you specifically alluded to the Members of the London Committee; if not, this should be done at once, in view of that section.
I have, &c.,
ALFRED LYTTELTON.
