I should call all who visit the opium shops "habitual consumers.' cases a mere question of money as to how much they consume up to a certain point, It is in most like tobacco smoking; a man will take opium, once he takes to it at all, whenever he feels inclined if he can afford it.
I do not believe the use of opium injuriously affects the population; it certainly does not do a tithe of the mischief that drink does. I think its use is spreading, especially amongst the Sinhalese, and it would spread much more rapidly were it not that it is considered “ bad form" to indulge in it.
I attribute this feeling more to the visible effect of the drug, ..., the condition of stupor which it often produces, than to its actual results.
For bhang, I have not a good word to say. I believe it is very harmful, and should like to see it prohibited altogether.
