WITH reference to the Colonial Secretary's letter to the Auditor-General, No. 408, of the 28th May last, I have in accordance with instructions ressived prosseded to Kandy on the 10th instant, and, with the Government Agent's permission, inspected the books of the Kachcheri, and beg to submit the following report an the result of that inspection.

In the cash book of the Government Agent, Kandy, for December 1882, the sum of Rs. 8,788.12 appears debited to “ Deposit Road Committee Fund,” under date 29th December, and credited to revenue under the following heads of receipta, vis. :--

LETTER from MR. Lx Masuria to the SECRETARY of State.

In reference to your letter of the 28th May last, I have the honour to state that the late Auditor-General, during his illness, instructed the Assistant Auditor to send the chief clerk of this office to Kandy to inspect the books of the Kachcheri, and to report on the two cases specifled in the letter from Mr. Le Mesuríer to the Secretary of State, annexed to your letter.

The chief clerk proceeded to Kandy, and I have now the honour to forward to you his report, which is dated the 14th June, the day on which I assumed the duties of this office.

In the ledger also the amounts are entered as received on the dates given above, but these dates were subsequently altered to 29th December 1882; no equivalent entries are, however, made in the deposit ledger or deposit oɛah book.
