Requesting to be informed whether Mr. Beyts did make any such state- ment to Mr. Ferguson as is alleged by Mr. de Coriolis, and whether the Governor authorised Mr. Beyta to make any communication to Mr. Ferguson on the subject of his can- didature, or of his nomination to a seat in the Council.

Expressing regret that such serious misunderstandings should have arisen between the Governor and Lieut.-Governor as are disclosed in the enclosures to the Governor's des- patch of 10th May, and observing that Mr. Clifford Lloyd appears to have taken a mistaken view of his position, but that as the changes recommended by him have facili tated the despatch of business they should be adopted.

Transmitting the original signatures to the complimentary address re- cently presented to him, with a classification of the signatures, and a letter on the subject from Sir V. Naz, and observing that he (the Governor) cannot find a single instance to justify the allegation that premore was put upon subordi nate officials to sign the address. Acknowledging receipt of Governor's despatch of 2nd August enclosing the signatures to the recent address.

Explaining bis action with reference to the candidature of Mr. Ferguson, and transmitting copies of a corres- pondence with that gentleman and Mr. Beyta.

continued attacks upon him are productive of scandal, that the Government cannot be administered, and that it is imperative for the Secretary of State to act at once in the interest of the Colony.

Transmitting a letter from Dr. Lovell the Chief Medical Officer to the Secretary of State, asking whether he is compelled to vote in favour of making the postponed compli- mentary address to the Governor a Government measure.

Besugoard, De Coriolis, Antelme, and Planel may be informed that the Secretary of State trusts they are misinformed as to the way in which signatures to the address to the Governor were obtained, and observing it is not desirable that Government officera should sign memorials personally relating to the Governor.
