for local activities: long-term and general
anti-Communist publicity are by local agreement
undertaken directly by the. Regional Information
Office, i.e., the latter approach departments,
officials, publicists and newspapers, etc., direct,
in agreement and consultation with local authorities.
The Department of Public Relations in the Federation
of Malaya is energetically concerned with the local
aspects of Communism and has disseminated a large
number of minatory leaflets, etc., in support of
security operations:
it also runs a number of news
sheets with quite large circulations.
P.R.O. Singapore has been absent during recent months,
and a considerable increase of activity can be
confidently promised soon.
a) There should be an increase of publications by the
Regional Information Office: the latter also hope,
as soon as their staff increase has taken effect, to
edit and place many more articles than hitherto.
(*) There seems to be room for the development of material
which could be transmitted through channels available
to the Trade Union Advisers in Malaya and Singapore
and also through channels available to Departments
of Labour. A beginning has been made with the
Department of Education in Singapore, and, if consulta-
tion with the local authorities shows no obstacles,
this should be extended to the Federation as soon as
possible.
(f) Both conditions and provision for publicity in
Sarawak, British North Borneo and Brunei are
primitive. The Director of the Regional Information
Office has the intention of visiting these territories
soon/
