(b) The maximun depth for manoeuvre.

TOP SECRET

(c) A "jumping off" place for cutting enemy lines of

communication within his own territories.

(d) Full use of combined Naval and Ary rire power.

(e) Full use of such air support as may be available.

and at the same time can be adequately held by a small number of troops is the best defence line.

ROAD AND RAIL APPROACHES.

22.

23.

(a) The only two roads from Chinese Territory to KC100N are

the roads from SHA TAU KOK and CHICKS BRIDGE (5029) to the FANLING cuadrilateral and thence either via TAIPO or the circular route through YUEN LONG.

(b) The railway follows approximately the same route as the

road via CHICKS BRIDGE - TAIPO - KOWLOON.

(c) All roads and the railway converge into the quadrilateral

of roads between FANLING and SHEUNG SHUI (5026).

(d) Lateral roads, South of the FANI ING quadrilateral and capable of taking heavy MT are non existent at the present time.

(e) The loss of the FANLING quadrilateral would mean that

the only road available for moving reserves, supplies, etc., from one flank to another would be by the two main roads joining in KOWLOON. This would be slow and costly in MT of which there will undoubtedly be a shortage.

(d) The road FANI ING - TAIPO KOWI CON is 21 miles long,

runs parallel to the railway, and is less liable to attack from enemy landing parties than the road FANLING - YUEN LONG - KOLCON which is 35 miles long and runs parallel to the coast for some distance.

(e) The most effective places for interfering with the road

FANLING - TAIPO KOWLOON are from TAIPO itself Southwards, i.e. where there are large bridges with difficult detours and there is country where landslides might be effectively arranged.

(f) Shallow draught craft can reach TAIPO Pier.

(g) The enemy will probably not require the roads and railway for maintenance to any great extent but he would like their use in order to speed up the rate of his advance. Provided his advance is rapid he will probably receive ample assistance from the local inhabitants in the way of food, porterage and guides to circumvent road blocks, demolitions, etc.

Deductions.

(a) Should the enemy gain control of the FANLING cuadrilateral our own forces are faced with the possibility of having to fight two widely separated actions, one in the area of YUEN LONG defending that road approach to KOWI CON
