SECURITY MEASURES IN
HONGKONG

HONGKONG, MAY 28
A police official to-day confirmed that the registration of villagers in the frontier districts of the New Territories was begun yesterday. He explained that it was a security measure but was not connected with the general regis- tration scheme to be announced by the Govern- ment soon. It is unofficially reported that the authorities are considering the imposition of a curfew in the border districts and the suspen- sion of all sea traffic in Mirs Bay and Deep Bay at night.
In a 10-minute ceremony at the naval dock- yard here to-day the destroyer Lingfu, for- merly H.M.S. Mendip, was returned to Great Britain by the Chinese Navy. The first naval reinforcement for the colony, the cruiser Jamaica (Captain F. A. Ballance), is expected to arrive to-morrow from the West Indies. Also due to-morrow is Vice-Admiral A. C. G. Madden, second-in-command,
Far East Station, flying his flag in the cruiser Belfast (Captain E. K. le Mesurier).
In Canton the acting President, General Li Tsung-jen, is reported to have told an Ameri- can correspondent that the city will be defended against the Communists as long as possible, but, if a retreat is imperative, the capital will be moved to the interior, probably to Chungking. He is reported to have said that the Government is not intending to move to Formosa.
