I have, etc., to acknowledge receipt of your

confidential despatch of the 28th November

forwarding a memorandum of the activities of the

Chinese Kuomintang in Hong Kong since the

re-occupation. I have been greatly interested in

Mr. Megarry's account of the position which this

organization holds in Hong Kong.

In view of the disturbing situation revealed

you will, no doubt be advising me of your viewD-

tobe

pa te eny appropriate steps which might be taken to

confine the influence of the Kuomintang in

Hong Kong to its proper sphere. In particular-I

should be glad to have your observations on the

suggestion put forward in paragraph 18 of

Mr. Megarry's memorandum that the Central

Government of China should be prevailed upon to

post to the headship of the Kuomintang branch in

Hong Kong a person who would work in a proper

relation of subordination to the diplomatic
