The alleged statement by Lord Ammon, leader of the Parliamentary Goodwill Mission in Shanghai on October 21st, that "high level talks are progressing on the issue of Hong Kong", which I promptly denied in a statement issued here, nevertheless touched off a few articles on the condition of Hong Kong, including one in the Kuomintang "National Times" of 24th October, suggesting that rendition was reasonable to expect and that it was necessary for good Sino-British relations. The article taunted with lack of patriotism those Hong Kong Chinese who are supposed to favour retention of British rule.
