5. The Hong Kong press on October 19th carried

reports of Chinese requests to the Portuguese

Government to return Macao. The Portuguese Govern-

ment were reported to have refuseduto discuss the

question. In the same reports it was stated that

owing to the more co-operative attitude being shown

lately by the Hong Kong Government, it was expected

that the problem of Hong Kong could be solved in a

"rational" way.
